October Reflections
Sweet, nostalgic lovely October. New England does October oh so well. As the foliage reaches its peak of burnt orange, deep scarlet, both faded and vibrant yellow and forest greens, the weather begins to cool in a sweet serenade. Autumn is a time where I reflect and take inventory on my life. I find myself finding poetry in motion in the foggy mornings, the leaves gently falling all around me and the shift from summer warmth to hearth and home of Autumn.
No photograph or piece of writing could truly capture the beauty, sadness, and complexity I feel during an October rainstorm or the misty dawns full of tumbling leaves and dewy grass. There are warm days full of light and sunshine and the horizon full of color, as well, that feel like the last lipstick traces of summer. The Earth right now is at such a vibrancy, yet the feeling it’ll give way to darker, cold days rests in my bones.
I try to find gratitude each morning and turn the emotive landscape into inspiration. Everywhere I look from front porches with their colorful mums to women in cozy cardigans is a reminder that the only constant in life is change. I can be resistant at first but find myself falling in love quickly with Autumn in New England with all it’s quintessential charm with a decorative foliage bowtie on top. I notice there’s an essential need to be pulled into the beauty and festivities of sweet Autumn. To also be drawn into our homes to create, paint, decorate, write, and sculpt before the winter season comes.
I do believe winter is a time for a restful poetic pause which is vital to living. I find the décor of Fall becomes cozier and warmer as we settle in for the longer, colder days of winter. There are seasons in our life and in this season I find the beauty, the inspiration, the breathtaking cobblestone streets still left in New England that I feel even sweeter, even prettier, even more romantic.
I breathe in black-eyed susan’s, asters, chrysanthemums and goldenrod and gently let go of the ache of nostalgia and embrace the magic promise of mystical mornings and cooler nights and the joy of a season full of color and beauty falling around us in the most gentle, loving way.
