"Come in out of the darkness"

A Vintage Blonde Book Club

Reading has always been a sweet spot for me, a special sanctuary I could escape to from the hazy summers of my childhood to navigating adulthood. I spent many summers of my youth going to tag sales and tiny bookstores finding hidden paper treasures. My favorites were old hardcover Nancy Drew books. Even though they were old, I felt like I was holding a piece of literary magic in my hand. What would it unlock? Adventure, mystery, romance? It was the most wonderful gift to hold a book and climb under the weeping willow at my grandparent’s house and read it during the sweetheart of summer.

As I got older, life and the complexities of it seemed to assuage my voracious appetite for books. The beginning of this summer I set out an intention to read more books. Reading inspires me to write more, to expand my mind and feel more creative and learn new language. I wanted to share with you my favorite books of all time and I hope this will be an on-going series with recommended books.

The Hanged Man by Francesca Lia Block

I found solace and a creative release in writing in my teens and Francesca Lia Block inspired me immensely. She has such descriptive, poetic prose and her stories are both intense and magical. The Hanged Man is dark, haunting, spell binding but written in such a beautiful way. An absolutely must read.

Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen

Sarah Addison Allen also infuses magic in her writing. Garden Spells is a love story but also a beautiful ode to a small charm and all it’s quirks and eccentricities. It captures familial love and rebellion and growing into your own magic.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I love Golden Hollywood so this was fantastic. It’s an easy read but a well-written, easy read. You feel immersed in the dizzy champagne glamour of 50’s cinema, the buzz of a film premiere in a gorgeous green gown, the loves and losses, and the heartache and setbacks of a Hollywood career of a sex symbol and underrated talent.
