Betty Draper Style
When I first watched Mad Men, I was captivated by Betty Draper, the very complex housewife of Don Draper. Even at her worst behavior, I couldn’t help but love her glamourous style. The first four seasons Betty’s style were largely influenced by Grace Kelly. There were lots of pretty, floral and darling dresses and effortless glamour. The latter seasons Mad Men’s costume designer Janie Bryant used Jackie O to evoke Betty’s changing style. Gone were the girlish, full-skirted dresses. Streamlined silhouettes and pencil skirts were introduced. Silk scarves, strands of pearls, dainty purses, and exquisite statement jewelry were all staples of Betty’s accessories.
I recently cut my hair and used Betty Draper as my inspiration. Although the show takes place in the 60’s, Betty’s hairstyle is very much a 50’s look. Her makeup was impeccable as a darling housewife and ex-model. Mad Men makeup artist Lana Horochowski revealed in a 2009 MTV interview: “Her at home look and her going out/evening look," the makeup artist notes. "For home she is very natural, basically a sheer foundation, think black eyeliner and mascara. Evening Betty goes a little thicker on the liner and a brighter lipstick, but is always coordinated with her clothing." Among Lana's favorite MAC shades for January's lips is the coral Vegas Volt Lipstick and lip pencils in "Redd" and "Cherry."
