Amethyst Dreams
When I set out to do a vintage inspired photo shoot, I had a lot of ideas floating around in my head on what era(s) I wanted to capture. I looked in my closet and pulled out dresses that had history, had a story I wanted to tell through photography. I had a marigold wiggle dress that was all shades Marilyn and Joan from Mad Men. I had a colorful vintage Lilly Pultizer that I wanted to project a sunny 70's vibe. Something was missing though. I wanted that third piece. Then I found it: a dark amethyst colored long-sleeved maxi dress with a high slit and just the right amount of neckline plunge. I immediately thought of Veronica Lake and her silver screen ilk with that sleek, mysterious allure of the 1940's.
The color was so bold and rich and although I should have sized down as the dress was baggy, I loved how it draped! I absolutely adore the glamorous head wear of the 40's screen sirens and the dress just transformed with a striped turban. To get a 40's look I always think long sleeve, good draping, bold jewelry and gorgeous hat and headware. I love Unique Vintage and Trashy Diva for both dresses and the perfect golden Hollywood Turbans. I use Pinterest and the Vintage Dancer to recreate looks and make sure I'm historically accurate. I always find fun facts - like in the 1940s movie studios used a ton of costume jewelry on their starlets to turn a regular outfit into glam to show elegance and affordability to their audience!
